Poiema 2019 Summer Recap
It's hard to believe summer is almost over and it's been almost 6 months since our vision party in March. For those that weren't able to make it, the vision party was held at the Saddleback Irvine South campus. Our good friends there offered us a space free of charge. We were so excited to see many familiar faces offering us encouragement and support. It was a great opportunity to share our heart for the city and how God has called us to live out our unique expression of the Church.
A month later, we hosted our first City Group Gathering. These are times set aside in our calendar where our different Go>> Communities can come together as family and celebrate as a whole. This time around we hosted a picnic and invited our neighbors and friends for some pulled pork sandwiches and fried chicken! Yum!
We also celebrated Easter with our church family at The Beacon in April. Over the last year, they have taken us in to their family and provided us with care, support, and resources as we work to grow Poiema together.
Easter also marks the beginning of the "50 Days of Love" season at The Beacon. This is a time set aside in the year where we pay specific attention to loving our neighbors and the city. Our activities ranged from small acts of kindness, such as sending encouraging notes and small gifts to our first responders and teachers, to a city-wide serve day where churches from the community joined together to participate in various service projects around the city.
Poiema had the opportunity to join in 2 projects this year. The first was to working in a community garden at a local high school and the second was to provide volunteers for a mental health conference hosted by OC Herald. Both sites gave us wonderful opportunities to meet and love on people in the community.
"50 Days of Love" concludes on Pentecost Sunday where we held a picnic with food, games, and fellowship.
In between our activities with "50 Days of Love" we were also invited to help with the OC STEAM Fest in Irvine this year. Every year the festival draws thousands of students and their families for a fun-filled day with many different attractions and activities related to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
During the Summer months there always seems to be a slow down of ministry activities. However, this time has been a blessing as it's given a chance for our Go>> Communities to settle in and focus on building good rhythms of life together as we learn to be missionaries within our city.
Looking ahead our new ministry year begins in September where we will kick things off with our first City Group Gathering on the 28th. While this past year was one of learning and setting a solid foundation for our ministry, this next year we hope to strengthen and grow our existing communities while also looking to launch a third community later on.
Please join us in praying over our communities as they continue to grow networks and strengthen friendships throughout the city, and that we would find persons of peace open to allowing us to live out God's love unconditionally. Also, please remember our upcoming City Group Gathering on September 28 in your prayers. We hope this is a time to encourage and uplift those in our Poiema family as we head into a new year of ministry, as well as serve as an opportunity to invite new people into what God is starting through us.
Thank you for your love and prayers!
